Knott's Berry Farm

I'm in the midst of a long road trip, just to get around and back simultaneously. A few months ago my sister took us to visit Knott's Berry Farm and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience. Now that we are back in town for another adventure we have another destination on our mind.

This time, we will explore the many wonderful exhibits and museums that were built by J.P. Huntley during his stay here as a tourist. We hope we can find some more great ones that don't already exist. So many good things were said about him and his place here. At least we can hope that we enjoy this one more than we did the others. My goal is to keep you all updated with all the activities that take place there. As well as any other attraction that he was able to accomplish here.

The first stop is the main office and museum where they have hundreds of books on their shelves. Knott's Berry Farm: A Beginner's Guide, There is so much detail in these book displays to show what Huntley has done or didn't do throughout the years. They have books on everything from history to politics, medical procedures to music to even how he preserved his own library. There is also something called a "Hospital," which shows all his work with his eyes being used as windows to look out onto the outside world. Another thing that caught most people's attention is his original house itself. It was completely demolished in 1921 and rebuilt in 1953.

If you go inside you can see the furniture, books, etc., that the man owned all throughout his 20s. For those interested in seeing all of Huntley's work, there is a special section dedicated to "the Knott's berry farm tickets." In the center of the property, there is a large stage and several smaller stages for smaller events like plays and concerts. Not only does this showcase Huntley's creativity, but his love for country music, folk music, and classical music.

Throughout his days here, I've seen him perform and sing songs from his past. His talent and ability to make his performance memorable and entertaining are truly remarkable. And by the way, he did all the singing himself. Knott's berry farm rides, His voice still holds a unique quality because of the nature of his persona and tone. On the night before visiting, I had to tell my brother that he would be going up to the theater. He was excited by the plan and didn't want to miss it. A couple hours later it arrived. When we went into Fondly known as "The Hotel That Burns Gold" we saw Huntley sitting on his porch.

He sang the songs he sang as if they still happened. He even got us both into some grooving tunes, like the song "Where Are the Roses?" It's a song that came out in 1925 by Frank Merrifield, and of course this wasn't written by Huntley until later, so it never has a specific title (just the lyrics). My brother thought the show might give me ideas for improving my writing skills. Of course, after seeing many classics like Citizen Kane and Gone With the Wind, I couldn't resist myself and went down to the screen to enjoy the show. While everyone else was talking, I focused almost entirely on James Stewart who played General John Linton. All of his lines, especially when he was trying to talk to someone through a piece of paper, always felt real because of his genuine reactions, and this time he spoke directly at me.

I was also happy to hear James say the name "Knott's Berry Farm", right before giving the speech when it comes to explaining what they need to know from the play. It is something very unique and distinct. Also being given a chance to read the script, I was quite happy to learn all of the dialogue was based on the actual words that the actor gave. Then in front of them was a guy who had no lines! What a difference! And when William Holden appeared there for the final scene, he stood right next to me and gave a little nod. It was nice to see someone on set who didn't necessarily talk to the actors; talk about something, and they gave him the speech for the play. When he was done with the show he was handed the whole script by James Stewart and they continued to hang out afterward. We chatted a whole lot while waiting for his text.

Finally, when it was over, I asked James if he could send the movie around so that I could have a copy in my room. He sent it along with the note that if I wanted it to be sent back to me it would be great to send two copies. It was so amazing to see how well they communicated with each other and that this was actually possible in the times they had. Also, when I opened the envelope and saw that this was mine, my excitement became exponentially higher than anything the others had been able to see.
